Heinz Herold
Born in Switzerland and raised bilingually in this country with four official languages, I early discovered some of the benefits of being able to communicate in several languages. During my technical education, I strengthened my base-knowledge of languages by alternatively filing German and French as mother tongue at the beginning of every new semester.
Later on, I improved my language skills exercising various international professional activities, constantly acquiring a broader cultural understanding and a deeper linguistic feeling.
Immigrated to Norway in September 1975, I enthusiastically learned the language of this Scandinavian country through self-studies. As my Norwegian in 1979 reached the required level for teaching, I held evening classes at Sandefjord Friundervisning. This was a six-year period with many opportunities to improve my Norwegian skills while teaching French to motivated adults.
Some years as a foreman in a heavy vehicle workshop and one year in charge of the Traffic Department in one of Norway’s at the time major transportation companies brought further possibilities to fine-tune my Norwegian, especially the knowledge of technical terminology.
This is how Norwegian became my fourth language after German, French and English. Today, after more than thirty years in Norway, whereof more than ten as a fulltime freelance translator, it is quite a while since Norwegian also became my main language.
